She made the women folk proud. What most people would dream of achieving in a lifetime Debra Veal has achieved at the age of 26.Holder of a first class honours degree and medals at World Championship level with the Great Britain Dragon Boat Team, entrepreneurial success with the launch of her online art consultancy and now the enormous achievement of having successfully rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean. This 5ft 5 young lady, was recently heralded Britain’s latest sporting heroine. The media worldwide went crazy for her story when she carried on rowing alone when her husband, a 6 ft 5 international oarsman, left the boat after developing an uncontrollable fear of the ocean. Debra loved every minute of life at sea in a 23 feet plywood boat and saw no reason to stop. She rowed on to become the youngest and only the third women in the world to have rowed an ocean solo. The 3000 miles journey was initially supposed to take 6 weeks but lasted for a staggering 3 months. By sheer determination and keeping herself focused she battled 30 feet waves, force 8 squalls, sharks and dodged tankers, but worst of all she had to cope with the loneliness and solitude. Now even Meg Ryan wants to buy her story turn it into a movie. Modest Debra uses of slides and video footage to powerfully illustrates her overwhelming positivity and ‘I will do it’ attitude.
