Johnny Ball
Johnny is a populariser of science and mathematics, writing and presenting 23 Solo Television series, with "Think of a Number", "Think Again", etc (BBC), and "Johnny Ball Reveals All" (ITV). His TV shows and videos have won 12 awards, including a New York International Emmy nomination, the ITVA "Presenter of the Year" Craft Award and a BAFTA. His series on "Odds and Probability" aired on ITV in November, and he features in the BBCs new "Simply Complicated" TV series.
As a late 60's comedian, he appeared in Val Doonican and Harry Secombe TV Shows, compered ITV's Christmas Night Spectacular, the first Rolling Stones Tour, starred in Sadlers Wells Opera, featured in Playschool for 17 years and wrote Playaway and adult TV comedy before turning to factual information. Lord Rector of Glasgow University 1994/6; President Nat Assoc for Gifted Children 1991/7; has written 5 books, devised GET SET which puts 400 girls through 26 projects at Imperial College, opened the Science Museum's Launch Pad and hosted its 10th Anniversary.
His educational musical, "Tales of Maths and Legends" launched the DFEEs Maths Year 2000, and packs major theatres nationwide. A new Science show "Tales of Blooming Science" will follow in September 2001. Previous shows - "Think of a Number" (13 years touring), science musicals; "Michael Faradays All Electric Roadshow" and "Let the Force be with You!" (both played to over 250,000) and "Energy Champions" for NORWEB in 1999. His British Aerospace Live Show in the Mind Zone at the Millennium Dome was a great success throughout 2000 and Johnny featured in their touring "Engineering our Future" campaign.
Enthusing on prospects for science and technology, he recently addressed the Oxford Union (twice), RAF Cranwell, the I.Mec.Es 150th birthday, for BP, BNFL, IBM, ICI, 100 years of the Electron for Sheffield Univs, Chinese Science for a Beijing Exhibition in Manchester, Histories of Shipping & Medical Science, and Maths master classes for Southampton University, Imperial, John Moores, etc. In two weeks in October, he made 40 speeches. New shows include "Everything Burns" (Fire Prevention "Best Event" Award), on the Construction (London Eye) and Automotive Industries (BMW) and lectures evaluating The Drug Scene, for parents on behalf of Southern Counties Police.
As an official Ambassador for "The Campaign to Promote Engineering" he hosts presentations for National Grid (8 yrs) and all branches of Engineering. At the BBC Tomorrows World Exhibition, he delivered 7 new lectures for "Young Engineers" and ran the DFEEs "Future Maths" stand to intro Maths Year 2000. He recently wrote, produced and presented "Structures", a highly inter-active CD ROM for the Gatsby TEP (Technology Enhancement Program).
Johnny has received two honorary doctorates in Science from Glasgow (1997) and Sheffield Hallam Universities (1998). He has several current Maths campaigns for 5/9 year olds working for ASDA, McVities and Sainsburys Booktrust. Johnny enlivens innumerable educational fairs or corporate events throughout the year, and his "Living History of Science" characters; Faraday, Newton, Brunel, Curie, Galileo, Nightingale, etc, all scripted and directed by Johnny, are always in great demand.
His famous daughter Zoe and husband Norman Cook (Fat Boy Slim) produced Woody, Johnny and Dis first grandson in December. Zoe and Johnny recently visited Mali together for Oxfam, and a lecture tour followed. Two sons, Nick and Dan graduated in 2000 in fine arts at St Martins and civil engineering in Leeds, and his wife Di keeps them all "On the Ball" at their home in South Bucks.
